The San Dimas Saints dominated the Bonita Bearcats 42-14 and won back the Smudge Pot trophy after 3 years in the 2016 Smudge Pot rivalry game.  It appeared San Dimas had something to prove after losing last season’s CIF championship game against Sierra Canyon. The Saints scored 28 of the  final 35 points in the game led by Senior back Jarrell Sykes who picked up 231 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Sykes rushed for 187 yards and caught a 44 yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game.  “I expect a really great season out of us,” Sykes said. “We can’t fall apart because of something that happened last season (losing CIF Championship game). We’ve got to keep moving forward.” The Saints other rusher Lyle Navarro gained 91 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

“We didn’t like the way last year ended,” San Dimas coach Mark Holman said. “And we’ve been preparing for these guys since January.” San Dimas only other win against Bonita over the past six years was a one point victory in 2012.

First year Bonita coach, Ibis Aguilar wanted his players to remember the loss.  “We showed our youth and inexperience with a lot of guys who hadn’t played in a varsity game,” Aguilar said. “But the good thing about making mistakes that hurt ourselves is that we can fix them. This is just one game in a long season.”

Bonita kept the game close in the first half.  The Bearcats answered the Saint’s early score with a 15 play score drive of their own with ended with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Flores. San Dimas responded with an eight play 70 yard drive of it’s own. The Bearcat’s defense looked like it might stop the Saint when Sykes broke through to the end zone on a fourth and goal from the eight yard line. In the second half, Bonita quarterback Jason Schiller replaced Andrade and threw a 29 yard touchdown pass to Joey Reynolds to put the score at 28 to 14 with 1:10 left in the third.  That is as close as the Bearcats would get as San Dimas put together a 16 play touchdown drive to put the game away.

Talk Of The Week

Smudge Pot, a familiar word for students and staff alike on Bonita’s campus. Bonita’s long time hold on the Smudgepot sadly came to a close this year. Despite our unexpected loss, the spirit among all BHS fans is palpable. From the cheering of The Den to the half-time show, the love and sense of community at the game remains unwavering. People could feel the energy on campus the morning of August 26th. Students dressed in their green and white, had bandanas tied around their heads, and even had their faces painted. Smudgepot was the topic of discussion, it was all that anyone could talk about. The chatter around campus could be heard from miles away. Everyone awaited the school day to be over so that they could go get ready for the game. In the afternoon, friends and family start gathering at Citrus College, the warm air starts to chill, as the stands begin to fill. The community and the players are ready to take on the game. Slowly, the stadium starts to fill up with students, staff, parents, and residents of La Verne and San Dimas. The football team can be seen practicing on the field, warming up in preparation for the big game. Right from the beginning it was evident that this game would be tough, but hard fought. After having the smudge pot for three years, Bonita had an overbearing sense of confidence. However, San Dimas was relentless as always. The rivalry gained momentum, even the rivalry posters got bigger and better. The Bonita v. San Dimas vibe had never been stronger. Insane amounts of people show their Bonita High pride. The student section, which is packed to the brim, calls out cheers to pump up the crowd and the players. As the sky goes from blue, to orange, to black, the sound of the band playing music, cheerleaders cheering, and people in the stands laughing and shouting intensifies. With every score made by Bonita, screams erupted throughout the stands. There are inspiring words being passed to team members and Bonita fans. As the game goes on, the scoreboard starts to favor San Dimas. Remarkably, there is little damper of the pride and spirit of Bonita. Despite the score of the game, smiles could be seen, cheers could be heard, and hugs were given. The game was hard fought, and although we may have lost the battle we will always win the war.

Bonita hires new head football coach, Ibis Agilar

Aguilar was an Assistant Coach last year, and experienced the rivalry with San Dimas for the first time.  Long time defensive coordinator Ray Medina remains on staff.

“To be honest, I don’t really feel like it’s more pressure than I would normally have,” Aguilar said. “I approach this game like I do any other of my games. It’s about preparing and being ready and getting kids ready.”

“I feel like we’ve done our due diligence getting ready for this game as a staff and as athletes, so I’m going in there confident and ready to go.”

“Watching them on film, all we really have is their scrimmage film, they’re definitely quick and they fly around on defense,” Aguilar said. “Offensively, they do a great job with Sykes and opening holes for him. That offense of theirs, they work that over and over again, so they know what they’re doing. It’s going to be our job to disrupt that.”
