San Dimas: 24 – Bonita: 14

Saturday, November 18, 1978 at Mt Sac

The Saints claimed a victory over the Bearcats in the 7th Smudge Pot Bowl by winning 24-14 at Mt San Antonio College on Saturday night. Ken Duran and Larry Unrien both rushed for over 100 yards for the Saints in the win. Duran had 110 yards on 13 carries while Unrein gained 120 yards on 12 rushes. The Saints picked up 276 total yards rushing compared to only 49 yard on 26 carries for the Bearcats.

Saints halfback Unrein, returned a punt from the Bearcats for a 58 yard touchdown at 5:08 in the first quarter. The Saints never trailed in the game. Bearcats kicker Trevor Jordan’s punt was blocked at 2:58 of the first quarter by Steve Baldwin which then led to the ball being recovered by Dan Lee, in the end zone for another quick 7 points for the Saints. After a 27 yard field goal, by Archie McLay, the Saints quarterback Duran, gained the final touchdown for the Saints with 6:32 left in the first half on a 6 yard run.

A big part of the Bonita offense involved senior quarterback Corey Miller who outsmarted the Saints secondary for 174 yards on 10 completions. A crucial interception on the on the Saint’s two yard line prevented the Bearcats from coming back. Bonita was able to score two rushing touchdowns by fullback Greg Lopez during the third and fourth quarters. Five Saint’s fumbles provided hope for the Bearcats to mount a comeback, but it was not to be. The Bearcats probably knew it wasn’t going to be their night when an 86 yard kick off return by Todd Marchese was brought back in the first quarter on a clipping penalty.

This year the varsity football team accomplished a lot. Even though their record didn’t really show it. After a bad start with Don Lugo, the team had to get ready for Charter Oak. In the Charter Oak game the Cats lost in the last 15 seconds. The Bearcats came back quick enough to shut out Sierra Vista. The greatest accomplishment of the season for the Bearcats was when they tied Ontario, the first place team in league. Leading the Bearcats through the year were co-captains Greg Lopez and Cory Miller. The season ended with the award banquet. With the coaches giving trophies to Ian Deherrera – general offense excellence; Mark Garcia general defense excellence; Dave Mccleary – most improved lineman; Jim Kelly – outstanding lineman; John Gonzales – outstanding receiver; Cory Miller – outstanding offense back, and Greg Lopez most valuable player. We will miss our graduating seniors. But look forward to next year which promises to be a very successful year

Some Heavy Scoring

Razzle Dazzle! Ball-Control! Smooth Operating! All are phrases that could depict the style and finesse of the offensive unit. Scoring an average of 16.8 points a game was good enough to crack the top 10 of the valley’s top scoring teams. Players that received recognition for offense were: All Hacienda League First Team Receiver Al Gonzales; Second Team Quarterback Kevin Burke, Lineman Dan Lee and Stuart Graham; Honorable Mention Running Back Jamie Corrales, Tight End Mike Decker, and Center Dean Shipcott. The offense was well coached, had skill and had determination, and always made for an exciting game.

Intensity Drives Saints

There’s nothing like a close football game. Because of the intensity and energy of the squad, there wasn’t a spectator to be seen leaving before the final gun. The team provided five nail biters that were just unbelievable. A game that had the Saints driving down for the winning field goal against top ranked Royal Oak, only to have the kick blocked in the last 40 seconds. Breaks like that one typified the year; and what an exciting year it was!!

Keeping Them Close

When you have a defense that is among the top 5 in the valley all year, someone is doing something right. The players who were recognized by the league’s coaches as outstanding were: First Team All Hacienda League Lineman Tom Burkhard, Linebacker Dan Lee, and Defensive back Jamie Corrales. The Second Team pick was Defensive back Larry Unrein fol- lowed up with Honorable Mention Lineman Ed Weber. The defense was steady and consistent all season long, and that is the key to a successful season.
