The San Dimas Saints defeated the Bonita Bearcats 24 – 10, ending the three year winning streak the latter had. The Saints were able to remain steady throughout the game both offensively and defensively, both pressuring Bearcats quarterback Terry Paradez and gaining yards with junior running back Nico Barbone, who covered an impressive 142 yards.
In the start of the game, the Saints were the first to score when Barbone’s 35 yard run set up a two yard touchdown by Erik Brown.
Following the second quarter, the 7-0 lead widened when Saints player Bronze Withem jumped on a Bearcat’s fumble, setting up Kevin Paulsen to give another touchdown to the team. Despite the 14-0 gap, the Bearcats didn’t lose spirit. Bearcats player Doug Griffith managed to score from nine yards out, closing in the gap 14-7. After both teams scored successive field goals, the half ended 17-10, Saints in the lead.
Into the third quarter, the Saints were able to score again when player Mick Kalmar scored with a three yard touchdown, widening the score 24-10. The Bearcats were unable to score with the remaining time left in the quarter.
Following the fourth quarter, both sides did not add points to the scoreboard. The Bearcats did have an opportunity, but a fourth down pass from quarterback Terry Paradez to Derrick Price slipped through the latter’s fingers and gave the ball back to the Saints.
Bearcats coach Eric Podley admitted that the Bearcats lost because the “game always comes down to who makes the fewest errors wins. [The Saints] made the fewest and we made too many. They deserved to win.”

Bearcats Finish Second in League and Make CIF Playoffs
Following two years of heartbreak after falling to make it to the playoffs. The Bonita Bearcat football team came into the 2007 season with one goal-to go to the ClF-playoff. The Bearcats fought through two-a-days in the summer heat for weeks and weeks in hopes of putting themselves in the best position to beat their opponents. When the season finally came around, they were ready to take on anyone willing to stand in their way. The season started off slow, with some tough-fought losses. When the time came to play their league games, they realized what they had to do and stepped it up. They finished the season with a 6-4 record and a league record of 3-1, with the second spot in the league standings, earning them a spot in the playoffs. The first week of the playoffs came around and the Bearcats faced a tough opponent in Foothill High School. It was a hard game but in the end, Bonita fell short and the season was over. Even though they lost, the Bearcats had no regrets, as they made the playoffs for the first time in three years. With a promising group of juniors on the team, the 2008 season looks bright for the Bonita Bearcats.

Saints Win Smudge Pot and Finish Co League Champions

This season for the Saints started off as great as it ended. The team made a bold statement with their decimation of Gladstone, and if the Bearcats had any questions about who was the better team, the Saints made that clear on October fifth when they brought the Smudge Pot home. The Saints ended League on a good note when they tied for the Championship title. San Dimas defeated Bonita in football on Friday night for only the second time in 12 years. While students celebrated on the field, the Smudge Pot, the trophy awareded the victor in this annual rivalry, exchanged hands in the middle of the field. It was then taken to the Saints’ sideline where the crowd cheered in appreciation. The trophy had a quick photo session with the cheerleaders and then off it went to the players, who carried it around the stadium as they continued to celebrate.This will be a night many San Dimas players, fans, coaches, teachers, parents, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, etc., will never forget.
Running back Nico Barbone probably summed it up best: ‘That’s something you will always remember. Being on the field and having everyone come out. Beating your rival. I’ll remember that forever.’
It’s what high school football is all about. There were no scouts, no national TV cameras, but there was a plenty of school spirit and a terrific atmosphere.
