Smudge Pot 2008

2008 Saints

San Dimas: 50 – Bonita: 33

October 12, 2008

San Dimas defeated Bonita 50-33 in a high scoring game with unconventional plays demonstrated by both sides.

In the first quarter, Saints player Daniel Joseph turned a tipped pass into an interception, bringing San Dimas to lead 7-0. As the game progressed, Bearcats holder Littleton Gardner made a wobbly lob on a faked field goal attempt that could have resulted in an interception, yet Bonita was able to steal the lead 8-7. The battle for the leading score still remained fierce as with 40 seconds left, Saints player Nico Barbone ran to the end zone, ending the first quarter 15-8, San Dimas leading.

As the second quarter began, San Dimas’ Daniel Joseph widened the lead 22-8, but it failed to remain that way due to two successful receptions made by Bearcats quarterback Terry Paradez. The score was tied 22-22, and it seemed it would remain that way as the first half was about to end. But with 10 seconds left on the clock, Daniel Joseph scored a touchdown for his team, giving San Dimas the lead at the end of the first half.

During the second half, San Dimas player Nico Barbone showed his prowess in scoring touchdowns. With only a field goal by Bonita changing the score in the third quarter, Barbone stood out with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Failing to catch up to the momentum Barbone brought to the Saints, the Bearcats lost the game while the Saints established a two-year winning streak for the smudge pot.

The Bearcat Football team came into the season with high expectations this year. Following a playoff berth in 2007, their goals were to get back into contention for a CIF championship. The Bearcats fought through a summer of two-a-days to put themselves in the right angle to fight for a Miramonte League championship. After over three months of practice, they were ready to take down any one that came in their way. After an average start to their season, going 3-2 through the pre-season, the Bearcats were ready to win their league opener. Bonita stepped it up and finished 3-1 with a second place finish to the CIF champions, Charter Oak. For the second consecutive year, Bonita made it into the CIF play-offs. They played a tough opponent, West Covina High School. In a hard fought battle, the Bearcats fell short, ending their 2008 season. Next season will begin with higher expectations and new faces, but the Bearcats are confident they can meet it with victory.

Varsity Takes it all the Way

There was no stopping the San Dimas Football team this year for they were unbeatable. Throughout the season the Saints’ spirit grew stronger and stronger. From the highs to the lows the team stayed optimistic and knew from the beginning that they would become the team they had always wanted to be. There is no doubt that through the hard work, grueling practices, and dedication, the Varsity team became one big family. From their Smudgepot victory to their final game, there was no stopping the Saints from domination on the field. They worked hard, and it paid off. Schools everywhere better watch out, because the SAINTS are unstoppable!

Smudge Pot Game

San Dimas pride was looming in the halls weeks before the annual “Smudge pot” game. The adrenaline kicked in at the beginning of the week when the cheerleaders had pies smashed into their faces. Later, our fellow Saints were put to the test as they used a sledgehammer to smash vans painted “Bonita Green.” Teachers gobbled up chocolate pudding, and students got hyped up at the rally. Everyone felt the spirit and we knew the Smudge pot trophy would be ours once again. During the exciting game, the crowd roared and cheered for the Saints helping the team make touchdowns and win. The final score was fifty to thirty-three, with the Saints winning by a landslide! There is no doubt that the energy of the crowd inspired the players, and of course, we knew our boys would not let us down. The Saints did their job winning the Smudge pot once again. There is no stopping us now, for “WE ARE LEGEND.”
