The Saints first varsity football game in their first full varsity season was a 28-0 victory over Schurr at Bonita Stadium on Thursday night September 23, 1971. At times during the game, San Dimas displayed an effective offense led by Wayne Moses. Moses scored at 4:57 of the second quarter on an 85 yard touchdown run. Later in the second, Moses set up the next score when he broke free for 38 yards to the Schurr two yard line. Quarterback Jeff Nelson unsuccessfully tried from the 2 before handing it off it to Moses to give San Dimas a 12-0 lead. Nelson would redeem himself by throwing to Greg Newson for the 2 point conversion.
The Saints defense shutdown Schurr and never allowed them to get in the position to score until the last minute of the game. Defensive standouts for the Saints were Bob Rollins, Rick Surdick and Newborn. The game was put away in the third quarter where the Saints wore down Schurr’s defense on a long drive that took nine plays and featured the running of Moses, Randy Spahr, and the pass catching of end Rollins. The drive was capped on quarterback Steve Barnard’s one yard push into the end zone at 4:54 of the third quarter. The Saints final touchdown occurred at 9:11 of the fourth quarter on a 40 yard pass from Nelson to Newborn. Nelson ran for the 2 point conversion.
Schurr tried to score during the final minute, driving down the field to the 15 yard line but time ran out before they could cross the goal line.
