Saints First Season ’70

Steve Barnard Saints QB

In 1970, the newly opened San Dimas High School and their young football team played a combination JV and Varsity schedule. Five of the Saints opponents that year were played against Junior Varsity teams and four games were played against varsity. The Saints finished the Season 6-3 winning all 5 JV games and losing three of their four varsity matchups. The Varsity games were against Big Bear, CSDR, Boys Republic and Irvine University.

Saints quarterback, Steve Barnard shared the following about the 1970 season:

“University was also a new school like us but one year ahead of us- they had no seniors- we had no juniors.  They beat us up pretty good at their place. I got knocked out of the game early with a concussion on a sack so I don’t remember much. ”

“The first true varsity game for SDHS was a loss on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Big Bear.  I believe the final was 33-6. I remember coach telling us beforehand that we would get harder then we ever had been hit before which was true!  It was a big physical mis match against our future Arrowhead league rival. We got revenge the next year with a close win at home. “
“CSDR had one of their better teams in 70. They had a lot of speed and we lost at home. We couldn’t stop their offense but we moved the ball well. “
“Our only varsity win came at Boys Republic. I don’t remember too many of the details of that one except I had a bad game but  Moses bailed us out- which he normally did. “
