San Dimas: 13 – Bonita: 8
Friday, September 27, 1991
San Dimas showed poise and patience Friday night which was enough to lift the Saints to a 13-3 win over their rival Bonita, in the 20th annual Smudge Pot.
Before the game, Saints’ head coach Dean Bennet said, “Everybody gets real excited about it (the smudge pot game). There’s a lot of bragging rights that go with it. It’s one of those important games in the season. Not just because of the rivalry. It’s just game three and we’ve got to improve.”
With a large crowd in the San Dimas stadium, senior halfback, Sean Evans made a 3-yard touchdown with 1:35 remaining securing the win for San Dimas. Bonita fell to 0-3. The first drive from San Dimas reached the Bearcats 10 yard line. Evans’ fumble was recovered by Bonita’s Dan Rivera. Then Senior Running back Darrell Kizzee raced 90 yards for an apparent touchdown but offsetting penalties nullified the play. Kizzee finished with 101 yards on 13 carries and caught two passes for 34 yards.
The Saint’s defense was able to keep the Bearcats out of the end zone. “Our defense did a good job on (Kizzee) for the most part, but he is so strong,” Bennet said. “You’re not going to stop him with one or two guys. You’ve got to gang-tack him to bring him down.”
Randy Bolognia broke a scoreless tie just 24 seconds before halftime. His 6 yard run capped a 12-play, 82 yard drive from the Saints. San Dimas led at the half 6-0. Bearcats were whistled for having 12 players on the field wiping out Glenn Miller’s 8 yard option pass to Alan Alaniz.
The Saints then responded with a 12-play drive but Seth Turnstall’s 32 yard field goal missed wide right. The Saint’s drive took up 7 minutes keeping the ball away from Bonita to secure the win. San Dimas’ drive was successful thanks to their quarterback, Dustin Hall, a junior. “That was the key,” Bennet shared. “Even without scoring we kept the ball way from them for a long time. We didn’t demand too much of our quarterback (Dustin Hall). And he did everything we asked of him.” This returned the Smudge Pot trophy to San Dimas for the third year in a row.
“It’s always a tough, tough games,” Bennett shared after the game. “The emotions run high and lend a considerable edge to it. It’s always difficult. And we didn’t help matters shooting ourselves the foot on a number of occasions.”

Despite Losing Season Bearcats Keep Up Their Spirit
Football season began early for the players. Summer practices were held almost every day of vacation. While most of us were enjoying the sun, the players worked hard at practice. The team improved by going to passing tournaments, and visiting the weight room. In the end, the Bearcats enjoyed being in shape, and having fun. Bonita was up once more for the game against archrivals San Dimas. The Bearcats played a great game, but were defeated. No matter how the season ended, the team still had fun. Bonita was always ready for a challenge. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

Though there were some highlights, such as winning the Smudge Pot for the third year in a row, beating Bassett-for their only loss, and using the new locker room at homecoming, the season did not live up to the hopes of its players. “Before the season started, we hoped we would go to C.I.F, said sophomore running back, Damien Carr who played JV. “Even if we were behind, we still wanted to do good,” he added.
Although there weren’t many wins, there were a lot of personal achievements: “Getting a whole bunch of tackles against Sierra Vista, because I got money from my parents,” said senior nose guard, Fred Carreon. Carreon. “My favorite game was Pomona, because I scored touchdown on defense,” said senior tight end, Virgil Nelson. Senior free safety and halfback, Sean Evans also enjoyed that game, “because I scored three touchdowns and a kick return.” Against Pomona, “I had three tackles and an interception,” said senior cornerback, Erick Jones. “My most memorable moment was the Azusa game, because I scored my first touchdown,” said sophomore fullback, Greg Deffenbaugh. Junior quarterback, Dustin Hall said, “My favorite game was Bassett, because we all played really well and I matured as a quarterback.” Senior wingback, Jeremy Crandall said, “I loved the Azusa game, because I was killin’ people.” Junior linebacker and wide receiver, Brad Alley said, “My best moment was winning Bassett, because I made a touchdown pass, and I caught the extra point to win the game.”

Smudge Pot Quotes
"Regarding the Saints responding to a field goal with a 12-play drive that used seven minutes . . ."That was the key. Even without scoring we kept the ball away from them for a long time. We didn't demand too much of our quarterback (junior Dustin Hall). And he did everything we asked of him.""
