San Dimas: 28 – Bonita: 3

Friday, November 6, 1992

For the fourth year in a row, San Dimas High School’s Saints brought home the smudge pot with a score of 28-6 at Glenn Davis Stadium. Two winless teams met on Friday night, but San Dimas is the one that came away with their first win in the Valle Vista League this year.

Each quarter featured a Saint’s touchdown, with the Bearcats scoreless until the last minute of the game. In total, the Saint’s offensive stats tallied up to 364 yards and 18 first downs. “It’s real big” San Dimas coach Dean Bennett said of retaining the Smudge Pot. “This is the one they’ll look back on and remember.”

By halftime, San Dimas led Bonita 14-0 and scored yet another touchdown to make it 21-0 in the third quarter. The turning point of the game occurred when Bonita had made it to the Saint’s 3 yard line, but fumbled the ball. San Dimas’ Steve Musharbash recovered it. The Saints then marched down the field 97 yards on 15 plays for the touchdown.

“That really hurt us. “Bonita coach Dave Stauffer said. “We marched down the field on our first two drives and didn’t score. That really killed us.”

Bonita’s starting quarterback, Gerald Hall, was knocked out temporarily in the second quarter. “We’re down to nothing,” Stauffer said. “It seemed like every break there was tonight went the other way.” Despite this, they were able to move the ball somewhat: 179 yards for 31 carries. In the final minute of the game, Bonita finally scored a touchdown. Darren Baumunk caught a 12 yard touchdown pass from Gerald Hall to score the Bearcat’s only touchdown of the game.

San Dimas’ victory was led by two players’ running: Wes Carson and Greg Deffenbaugh. Carson went for 130 yards on 16 carries and scored a 26 yard touchdown run; Deffenbaugh went for 83 yards on 12 carries and scored a 20 yard touchdown run. The Saint’s quarterback, Dustin Hall, threw for 127 yards, including two touchdown passes of 6 and 25 yards to Brad Alley. Alley in total caught 4 passes for 91 yards.

“I’ve been at San Dimas for eight years now and the kids, for some reason, seem to play better against teams they know well,” Bennet said. “It’s almost like they don’t get excited about playing people we don’t know. They got fired up to play Charter Oak and they were fired up to play Bonita. They know all those guys.”

The Saint’s performance impressed Bonita coach Stauffer. “I really felt we could beat them. This was the best game I’ve seem them play all year. They were very emotional,” said Stauffer. “It’s a tough game. My kids are really hurt. They really wanted to win this one.”

Personal Best
As a highlight of their season, senior football players are proud to have won the Smudge Pot at their last Bonita game. Senior Damien Weems said, “I regret that our football team couldn’t pull out a few more victories. I wish we could have gone to C.I.F. my senior year. “I was so nervous before the game against La Sierra because it was my first year in varsity, but I was very excited,” said junior wide receiver Albert Vargas. The team won their first game despite not having the home field advantage. After winning that first game, the varsity team had high hopes. Though expectations weren’t met, there were highlights especially the fourth straight capture of the Smudge Pot. “The Bonita game was one of the easiest games we played: never lost to Bonita since I played my freshman year,” said senior offensive guard Damien Weems. “We were thrilled that we beat Bonita because after a three-game loss, the Bonita game topped it off for the team,” said junior offensive tackle Steve Musharbash. “The best game l played was when we played Sonora because all the other games,” said junior running back Greg Deffenbaugh of one of many personal achievements he had in the season. “My favorite game was against Workman because I had two sacs, forced a fumble and had an interception,” said senior offensive guard Joel Cohen. Junior offensive halfback Damien Carr’s best game was against, “Bonita because I caught a pass that was uncatchable. The most intense game played was against South Hills because I played kickoff return and was nervous.” Junior running back Chris Castro added, “My favorite games were against Bonita and Workman because they were the most intense games and the more intensity, the more challenging and exciting the game is” -Martha Vargas
