2014 SmudgePot (1)

BONITA: 23 – SAN DIMAS: 14

Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Citrus College

Bonita will hold the Smudge pot for another year.

Bonita High School scored its second consecutive win over its rival team, San Dimas, with a 23-14 victory at Citrus College on Thursday night. Quarterback Cody Brazzill accounted for 159 yards for the Bearcats , who improved to 4-1. Angel Verdugo rushed for 165 yards and scored three touchdowns. Bobby Rios rushed for 79 yards and scored a touchdown for San Dimas, which slipped to 4-2. Garrett Deane, after Bonita converted a key fourth down with a 20-yard pass from Brazzill to Danny Gelalich, kicked a 24-yard field goal with only 1:33 left to pull out a win.

“It’s a big deal, but we treat it as any other game,” commented Verdugo. “We just came out here and played our game. We listened to our coaches and came out with a big win.” San Dimas, after managing a lead of 14-7, looked like it might finally score a win in the series for the first time since 2012 early in the third quarter.

Rios ran 40 yards to tie it at 14 with 9:08 left in the quarter before the Saints partially blocked a punt and got possession of the ball at Bonita’s 26. Bonita then held San Dimas to two yards through the next four plays. The Bearcats’ offensive line, and Verdugo, went on to take a lead. Verdugo managed a 74-yard drive and gave Bonita a 20-14 lead late in the quarter with a 6-yard run. Bonita then cemented their lead with drives of 54 and 38 yards, the latter resulting in Deane’s 24-yard clincher.

“We worked hard the whole week,” Verdugo said. “We know they are a real great team and wouldn’t give up easily. Our line stepped up and we just kept pounding the (ball).”

Bonita took advantage of two San Dimas fumbles to take a 14-7 lead at halftime. The second fumble, at the Saints’ 19-meter line, led to the Bearcats’ first score. Verdugo rushed for 77 yards in the first half and broke through two tackles on a 15-yard run for a 7-0 lead with only 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Manny Elizalde followed with a 61-yarder to tie the game at 7-7 on the second play of the second quarter. Verdugo followed with a one yard run for a 14-7 lead at the break.

WE RUN THIS FIELD

The Saints tackle adversities and keep going until the end by Lindsey Hughes Varsity football came into this season with high expectations after coming off the high of winning C..F. last year. The boys practiced hard for nothing less than perfection. It was a rough start for the boys, however, they didn’t give up; instead they worked even harder. They woke up at early hours and practiced in the mornings before the sun even rose. They put in the work and in the end, they conquered, as the rest of the league didn’t know what hit them. They came off a hard loss against Northview, but absolutely demolished Nogales 49-0. They continued on, defeating the Covina Colts in an important game with a score of 23-14 in order to make it to C.I.F. From then on, it was a breeze. They continued tearing their opponents apart and ended their league games beating Wilson with a dominating score of 56-0: a great way to end league play. They fought on and never gave up, even in the end. The boys came together to overcome their early struggles and matured into an amazing team. They worked hard and they deserve the best.

THE UNDERDOGS

The crowd goes wild! by Julia Cannon

In the days leading up to the Smudge pot game, the annual football game versus our rivals, the Bonita Bearcats, students, players, and coaches were getting all pumped up. At San Dimas students participated in dress-up week, where no one was allowed to wear green. The energy continued as Game Day arrived and students were on their way to the game held at Citrus College. “The student section was bigger and louder than I had ever seen it. It really made me feel like win or lose, we still had support”, said captain, Manny Elizalde. The game started out with a Bonita touchdown, but the Saints continued to fight until the end. Although the final score was 23-14, and Bonita got the win, the Saints “fought all the way to the end and never gave up”, said quarterback Andrew Avila. He continued, “It’s a great rivalry and I wish the best of luck to our team next year.” The Saints hope to defeat the Bearcats in the fall and bring the Smudgepot trophy back where it belongs.

Smudge Pot Quotes

""It's always an electric atmosphere," Bonita coach Adrian Medrano said. "Every high school kid should have the experience of playing in a game like this that means so much to the community. But in the end, we don't go about preparing any differently than we do for other opponents.""

Adrian Medrano | Bonita Head Coach 2014
