BONITA: 40 – SAN DIMAS: 20
Thursday, September 1, 2011
For the first time in the almost forty year history of the Smudge Pot rivalry between Bonita and San Dimas, the game was played at Citrus College field on Thursday night. Bonita defeated San Dimas decisively for the second year in a row 40 to 20.
“Our kids know each other and our coaches are close,” Bonita Coach Podley said. “It’s a game you don’t want to lose, that’s for sure.” San Dimas scored a touchdown putting them up 7 to 3 by the end of the first quarter on a beautiful 88 yard run by DaVente Brown who had 150 yards on the night. The Saints couldn’t convert from the one yard line on a great opportunity to extend their lead during the first quarter.
Bonita bounced back during the second quarter with nine points. Bonita scored 24 points in the 3rd quarter with both Cameron Griffin and Garret Horine (one rushing and one receiving) both scoring two touchdowns. Reggie Turner would score a touchdown late in the game. However during the 4th quarter San Dimas Dimas tried to get back in the game by scoring 14 points. Saint’s Quarterback Shawn Kennedy completed 11 passes for 101 yards.
“We had a lot of holes to fill,” Podley said before the game. “We had 26 seniors graduate, so we needed a lot of guys to step up and make their presence known.” And indeed Bonita did step up with their leading rusher being sophomore Cameron Griffin who ran for 61 yards on 100 carries while Junior Reggie Turner rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries.
The young Bearcat quarterback,Tanner Diebold threw for a touchdown and completed 6 passes for 80 yards. He looked more confident as the game wore on which is a great sign for Podley as he’s only going to get better. “I think we now have most people in the right spots,” Podley said. “With some of the sophomores, there’s still some movement, but I think we’re finally settling in on where all these guys should play. Now it’s a matter of getting them comfortable in those spots and getting them to perform at a high level.”

Varsity Football We Are Family

Riding the “cherry picker” up and down, eagerly awaiting his Saints to finish off each game with glory, Coach Zernickow managed to lead his team through a remarkable season. After a rough start, the Saints astonished many fans by how fiercely they fought together. They put an unbelievable amount of energy and effort into every Friday night game and made their coaches proud. Looking back at the season the boys noted their biggest challenge of the season to be against Covina, ending in a loss of 21 to 39. That didn’t stop the Saints from beating Baldwin Park, Northview, Pomona and many more well-built teams. Their success throughout the season got them to playoffs and semi-finals. Unfortunately, Saint Helmets hit the ground Saturday night in the last game against San Gabriel. Many players were emotional but the memories and friendships made are irreplaceable. The Saints worked hard through the season together, shoulder pad to shoulder pad.
Smudge Pot challenge our rivals
This year’s Smudge Pot week was full of spirit and anticipation as we all waited for the annual game against our rival, the Bonita Bearcats. We showed spirit at both the night and morning rallies which were outside for the very first time, due to the reconstruction of the gym. In getting ready for the big event, wearing green became a crime, players and cheerleaders got pied in the face, and a vibrant bonfire was held to show our support and excitement. Even though our annual Smudge Pot game did not go our way, the varsity football team put up a great fight. Devante Brown scored the first touchdown run in the first quarter and several interceptions throughout the game. The unfortunate final score was 21-40 with the Bearcats taking the Smudge Pot trophy. Those kitties may have it now, but we still hold the record for the most wins in Smudge Pot Game history.
