BONITA: 41 – SAN DIMAS: 20
Friday, September 3, 2010
Bonita’s seniors finally got their Smudge Pot victory after three frustrating years of losing to San Dimas in the intra-district rivalry game on Friday night at Glenn Davis Stadium. Bonita turned in a dominant performance winning the game 41 to 20.
Cody Mckenzie was emotional with the long awaited win after the game. He returned an interception 12 yards for a touchdown that put the Bearcats up 17-7. “There are so many emotions,” he said. “They’ve had it for three years and this is my senior year. I really wanted it back. So did all of us who are seniors and had not won it.”
San Dimas led early after a two yard run by Angel Gonzalez put the Saints up 7-0. Bonita’s success after that was aided by San Dimas’ mistakes. The Bearcats scored 24 points in the second quarter with three of the scores coming off San Dimas turnovers.
The Bearcats went up 24-7 at the half after a nine yard pass from Greg Spathis to Casey Horine with 1:50 left. Brandt Davis had two field goals and five extra-point kicks on the night. Horine would later break loose on a 57 yard touchdown run. He rushed for 77 yards on just four carries.
“The line opened a great hole for me,” said Horine. “That gave us back the momentum and really deflated them.”
The star for San Dimas was Kevin Kolbeck who caught a 27 yard and later a two yard pass for touchdowns. He finished with five catches for 46 yards.
After the game, Bonita head coach, Eric Podley, smiled, a sigh of relief as the celebration broke out around him. “Three years is way too long. Our guys really wanted this,” he said. “Our seniors have been working hard. They didn’t want to be a senior class leaving here without it.”

DETERMINED Varsity Football: 2010 CIF Finalists
The two words that changed the athletics program during the fall of 2010 was Bonita Football. The Varsity Football team showed character and heart during the season. This season was by far the best season Bonita Football has had in many years. The Varsity boys finished 2nd in league with a highlight of beating the San Dimas Saints and getting the Smudge pot back. The Varsity Football team then entered CIF and had an outstanding run beating California High School, Muir HighSchool, and La Serna. For the first time in 11 years the Boys made it to the finals where they played West Covina. They lost 33-39 but they played their best game of football that night. The Bonita football team showed the Bearcats how they can be DETERMINED.

Break activities brought out the competitive spirit Bonita needed to come out on top. The creativity and support of the Bearcats shone through during themed dress days. An energetic rally was the final event during Smudge pot week; students and players alike were ready to take on San Dimas and dominate on the football field. San Dimas High School Varsity Football Rules
The football season started with great enthusiasm and high expectations after winning the C.I.F. Championship last year. Aside from their great success, the Saints are closer as a team, singing with one another on the bus to and from each game and in the locker room. They improved in all aspects of the game and continued to challenge themselves. Although the Saints did not win League, they did make it to the third round of the C..F. playoffs. Making it to the third round, the Saints had pushed themselves as far as they could go. These Saints are nothing short of hardworking and talented.

This is not a game: This is War – Smudge Pot 2010
Spirits were high as the Saints awaited the highly anticipated Smudge pot game against our cross town rivals, the Bonita Bearcats. In preparation for the game, cheerleaders allowed themselves to be pied in the face and football boys cross- dressed to keep students pumped. The color green became a sin in itself, and who could possibly forget the fear and passion instilled in the hearts of all Saints by dear Mr. Holman? Finally, game time arrived, the first kick starting not only the game, but our Varsity boys’ season. The game was off to an advantageous start when Saints took the lead 7-0 after a run by Angel Gonzales. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. Bonita was able to dominate the majority of the game, with small glimpses of hope led by Kevin Kolbeck and other determined Saints. The final score of the game resulted in a 20-41 loss for Saints. However, our Senior class can proudly boast to have won three out of the past four Smudgepot games. Saints can also boast that in the long run, we have won more Smudgepots than the Bearcats, who run on luck more than talent.

Rematch Against Monrovia
The regular season game against Monrovia was a battle for the Saints to maintain last year’s championship title, while Monrovia wanted nothing less than to regain their pride. The Wildcats kept up with the Saints throughout the entire game. At the end of the fourth quarter, the score was tied at 24 points The Saints were feeling the pressure to win and they knew Monrovia wouldn’t give up without a fight. Winning the game by one point in overtime, San Dimas proved once again that they deserve their CIF Rings.
