BONITA: 47 – SAN DIMAS: 7

Friday, September 13, 2024 – 7:30 at Citrus College

In the 52nd annual Smudge Pot rivalry, Bonita High School’s football team extended its dominance over San Dimas, delivering a commanding 47-7 victory on Friday night at Citrus College. Junior quarterback Travis Lippert orchestrated the win with an impressive aerial display, throwing for 333 yards and five touchdowns completing 14 of 17 passes, securing Bonita’s sixth consecutive triumph in the series.

San Dimas briefly stirred hope with an early onside kick recovery, but the Saints’ chance at an upset faded quickly. After their offense failed to convert, Lippert unleashed a 74-yard bomb to senior Dylan Robinson, igniting Bonita’s offensive onslaught. Robinson, a University of Washington commit, finished with 206 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including another 75-yard score later in the game.

“That (opening play) was in the script,” Robinson said. “We knew it was going to be an exciting play to start. We just went out and did what we practiced.”

Lippert, who stepped into the starting role after the previous starter transferred to Ontario Christian, showcased remarkable poise and precision. “It’s a great program,” Lippert said. “Coach Beatty and Coach Bogan preach a great atmosphere, and there’s no other high school I’d rather be at than Bonita.”

“We’ve got a kid (Lippert) who wore it all last year as the backup quarterback,” Beatty said. “We’re bigger on O-line, so he has some time and he’s shown resilience. The kid could’ve dipped when it got tough last year and he didn’t.”

The Bearcats (4-0) scored touchdowns on all seven of their possessions, turning the game into a one-sided affair by halftime. Co-coach Bo Beatty emphasized the team’s unity and work ethic. “They lean into each other and aren’t worried about their own success. They’re focused on what Team Bonita is trying to accomplish.”

San Dimas (2-1) managed a glimmer of offense when quarterback Brandon Meredith connected with Jeremiah Gibson Fernandez for a 47-yard touchdown to close the gap to 14-7. However, Bonita responded with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lippert to Cole Parra before Robinson’s second touchdown, which stretched the lead to 27-7 just before halftime.

Adding to Bonita’s dominant performance was star senior linebacker and wide receiver, Noah Mikhail, a Texas A&M commit, who showcased his versatility on both sides of the ball. Mikhail contributed with a key 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter topping off an 80-yard drive, extending Bonita’s lead and further crushing San Dimas’ hopes of a comeback. Mikhail’s impact on defense was equally significant, with his presence helping to stifle the Saints’ offense throughout the night. “He’s a leader on and off the field,” co-coach Bo Beatty said. “His ability to make plays in all phases of the game gives us a huge advantage.”

After San Dimas got the ball back in the next series, their hopes of a comeback were dashed when the Bearcats recovered a fumble at the Saints 28 yard line. Cole would score another touchdown for Bonita on a 5 yard run.

While the victory marked a key milestone in Bonita’s season, Beatty urged his players to maintain a growth mindset. “You’ve got to get better. You can’t get satisfied. We haven’t done anything yet,” he said. “We’ve been in this spot before, and it hasn’t quite finished the way we wanted.”

With Lippert at the helm and Robinson leading the receiving corps, Bonita appears primed for another deep run this season. Coach Beatty acknowledged the strength of their rivals, saying, “San Dimas is a very good football team year in and year out.” For San Dimas, the game will serve as a tough lesson, but one that could fuel their efforts as they regroup and push forward in 2024.

Post Game Interviews

Standout performances from seniors Dylan Robinson and Noah Mikhail highlighted the game, with Robinson scoring two touchdowns and recovering a fumble. Both players emphasized the importance of preparation and maintaining focus. “We prepare for every game the same, can’t take any opponent lightly,” Robinson said, while Mikhail added, “We treat every game as a challenge, regardless of who we’re playing.”

The rivalry win carried extra satisfaction for the team, especially with some pregame talk from San Dimas adding fuel to their fire. Despite the dominant scoreline, Robinson and Mikhail were quick to deflect praise to their teammates, especially junior quarterback Travis Lippert, who threw five touchdown passes. “Travis is great,” Robinson noted. “People put him as an underdog at the beginning of the season, but we always knew he was going to be great.”

Lippert himself reflected on the win, describing the game as “fun” and noting how well everything clicked for the offense. Coach Bo Beatty lauded Lippert’s leadership and resilience, calling him the best quarterback in the San Gabriel Valley. Beatty highlighted the team’s culture of hard work, mutual respect, and celebrating each other’s success, which he believes fosters a bond that transcends the football field. “When you’ve got kids who are focused on the team and not on themselves, that’s something special,” Beatty said. “These kids are learning lessons that go beyond football—they’re becoming better people.”

The praise extended beyond just the star players. Joseph Lara, a versatile player known for his dual-threat abilities, was recognized for his contribution both as a rusher and receiver. Lippert echoed this sentiment, pointing out how difficult it is for opponents to game plan against Lara. Coach Beatty also gave credit to players like Jacob Maddox and Isaiah Lazar, whose efforts may not always make the headlines but are crucial to the team’s overall success. He praised Lippert’s perseverance from last season, underscoring his leadership and resilience in earning the starting role this year.

Senior Adyden Garcia also played a pivotal role on defense, helping to shut down San Dimas. Garcia, now in his third year on varsity, cherished the dominant win in his senior year, calling it “wonderful” and “the best.” He credited the victory to doing his job and staying disciplined, as emphasized by Coach Beatty. When asked to grade the team through the first four games, Garcia gave them a B+, acknowledging room for growth but confident that they would continue to improve.

Garcia spoke about the strong bond within the team, describing it as a “tight Brotherhood.” He dismissed any notion of jealousy among teammates, despite stars like Mikhail and Robinson often receiving more attention. “It’s all love,” Garcia said. “Those are our boys, no cockiness, all Brotherhood.” As the Bearcats look ahead to the rest of the season, they remain focused on building upon their family-like atmosphere and continuing their winning ways.

Bonita Bearcats 2024 Season Preview

Coming off a strong 2023 campaign with a 9-3 record, the Bonita Bearcats are set for an exciting 2024 season as they make the leap from the Mountain West League to the more competitive Sierra League. With a mixture of returning stars and new faces, head coach Steve Bogan is optimistic about the team’s potential despite the challenges ahead.

The Bearcats are packed with top-end talent, led by two-way standout Noah Mikhail, who is committed to Texas A&M. Mikhail, a versatile athlete, was the Mountain West League Defensive Co-MVP last season and will be a key playmaker on both sides of the ball. Joining him is Dylan Robinson, a four-star recruit and Washington commit, who was the Mountain West League’s Offensive MVP at wide receiver and is equally formidable at cornerback.

Bonita also brings back key players like Carson Bahruth on the offensive line, and Cole Parra, a senior running back/linebacker. The defense will be anchored by Jacob Maddox, a junior DB, and sophomore defensive lineman Isaiah Lazarus, who earned all-league honors last season.

Key Players to Watch

  • Noah Mikhail (Sr., WR/RB/LB): All-Mountain West League first team, San Gabriel Valley All-Area first team, and Mountain West League Defensive Co-MVP.
  • Dylan Robinson (Sr., WR/DB): Mountain West League offensive MVP and a Washington commit.
  • Travis Lippert (Jr., QB): Stepping in as the starting quarterback, Lippert had an impressive summer and will lead the offense this season.
  • Carson Bahruth (Jr., OL): All-Mountain West League second team, providing stability and strength in the trenches.
  • Cole Parra (Sr., RB/LB): A versatile player who will be a force on both offense and defense.

Quarterback Transition

One of the major storylines heading into the season is the quarterback position. Last year’s starter, Daniel Mielke, transferred to Ontario Christian after earning all-league first-team honors as a freshman. In his place, junior Travis Lippert steps up to lead the Bearcats’ offense. Coach Steve Bogan is confident in Lippert’s abilities, stating:

Travis throws a great ball and had a great summer. He makes good reads and is as talented as many of the quarterbacks I’ve worked with. We have a lot of confidence in him.

With Lippert’s arm and a wealth of experienced targets, including Mikhail and Robinson, the Bearcats’ offense has the potential to be explosive.

New League, New Challenges

The shift to the Sierra League presents fresh challenges for Bonita, as they’ll face off against teams like Charter Oak, Glendora, and Colony. Depth could be an issue for the Bearcats, particularly in such a competitive league, but Bogan remains hopeful:

Depth is always a concern, and some spots are a real concern. But this is a good group that works their butt off, so I’m very fortunate.

The league favorite, Charter Oak, will test Bonita, but with their top-tier talent, the Bearcats are capable of competing with any team on their schedule.

Intriguing Matchups

The Bearcats face a tough nonleague schedule, starting with a matchup against Muir on August 23. Perhaps the most anticipated game is the August 30 contest against Ontario Christian, where Bonita will face their former quarterback, Daniel Mielke. The rivalry game against San Dimas on September 14 at Citrus College is another date fans should circle on their calendars.

2024 Bonita Bearcats Schedule

  • Aug. 23 vs. Muir – Win 27-7
  • Aug. 30 vs. Ontario Christian – Win 35-7
  • Sept. 6 vs. Grand Terrace – Win 49-7

Outlook

With their combination of star power and potential breakout players, the Bearcats are primed for another strong season. While depth and the new league are concerns, coach Bogan and his squad are confident they have the talent and work ethic to rise to the occasion.

If Bonita can stay healthy, “the sky’s the limit.”

San Dimas Saints 2024 Football Season Preview

The San Dimas Saints are poised for a breakout season in 2024, following a strong 2023 campaign in which they finished with a 6-5 record and a first-round playoff appearance in CIF Division 10. This year, the Saints bring back an experienced roster that’s hungry to take the Valle Vista League crown and make a deep playoff run.

Head coach Mark Holman returns with confidence in his senior-heavy team, which has shown a strong balance between a powerful ground attack and a growing passing game. “We’re more balanced this year,” Holman said. “Brandon [Meredith] is throwing the ball well, and we can move the ball on the ground.”

Key Players to Watch

  • Caleb Morquecho (Sr., RB/S): Morquecho is a four-year starter and the heart of the Saints’ offense. After rushing for over 1,000 yards last season, he’s setting his sights on breaking the school rushing record. “One of my goals this year is to get the school rushing record. I think I need about 2,000 yards,” he said. With a physical line opening holes for him, Morquecho has been dominant, already tallying 115 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Pasadena.
  • Julian Vigil (Sr., ATH): A versatile athlete, Vigil is a playmaker on both sides of the ball. He was a first-team all-league selection at defensive back and wide receiver last season. “He’s my target,” said quarterback Brandon Meredith. “He’s open, and he catches the ball.” Vigil also chipped in with rushing yards, highlighting his ability to affect the game in multiple ways.
  • Liam Loyola (Jr., LB): Loyola anchors the defense, which held Pasadena to just 48 yards of total offense in the Saints’ 49-0 victory. Loyola’s presence in the middle is crucial to stopping opposing offenses, and his ability to “just go to the ball” keeps the Saints’ defense on high alert.

Offensive and Defensive Strengths

San Dimas’ offense revolves around a punishing ground game, averaging 343 rushing yards per game, thanks to the trio of Caleb Morquecho, Julian Vigil, and Tristan Fierro. However, the Saints are more balanced this year with Brandon Meredith showing improved efficiency in the passing game, completing 71% of his passes over the first two games.

On defense, the Saints are equally impressive, allowing only 14 points in two games and shutting out Pasadena in their home opener. Liam Loyola leads a swarming defense that has yet to allow an opponent to gain more than 150 yards of offense.

Intriguing Matchups

The biggest game of the year comes early, as the Saints face their arch-rival Bonita in the annual Smudgepot Game on September 14 at Citrus College. San Dimas hasn’t beaten Bonita since 2017, and last year’s 28-0 loss still lingers in their minds. With a bye week to prepare, coach Holman believes this year is their best shot at reclaiming the Smudgepot.

Coach Holman emphasized the importance of the rivalry: “We know what Bonita brings to the table. They’re a great team, but we’ve been preparing, and I think we’re ready.”

2024 San Dimas Saints Schedule

  • Aug. 23 vs. Burbank – Win 49-14
  • Aug. 30 vs. Pasadena – Win 49-0
  • Sept. 14 vs. Bonita at Citrus College – Loss 7- 47
  • Sept. 21 vs. Covina
  • Sept. 28 vs. Rowland
  • Oct. 5 at Northview
  • Oct. 12 vs. Diamond Ranch
  • Oct. 19 vs. West Covina
  • Oct. 26 at Los Altos
  • Nov. 2 vs. Baldwin Park

Outlook

With an experienced lineup and explosive offense, San Dimas looks ready to challenge for the Valle Vista League title. If their defense continues to perform at a high level and the running game stays dominant, the Saints could be a dangerous playoff team. “We just need to execute, and we’ll be tough to beat,” said senior standout Julian Vigil.

Smudge Pot Quotes

"“It was a crazy environment,” Mielke said. “The whole town came out and watched. It was exciting and a really fun game. It’s a big deal in La Verne. I think the community we have around us is so great. It’s not surprising to see this many people. We’re just so thankful. It’s really awesome.”"
