BONITA: 21 – SAN DIMAS: 13

Friday, October 8, 2004

Bonita won the Smudge Pot game against San Dimas on Friday night 21-13 in front of a standing room only crowd at Glen Davis Stadium. Bonita was victorious even though the Saint’s offense out gained the Bearcats in total yards 259 to 225. While the Bearcats offense was not consistent, they did take advantage of some costly mistakes and effective trick plays. Bearcat Quarterback, Mike Williams threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and made a 66 yard reception for a score.

“It feels great,” Williams said about the victory.” They were talking trash all year and we couldn’t say a thing. Now, it’s our turn. We got it back.”

Early in the first quarter the Bearcats scored with a 12 yard touchdown run from Williams, after a blocked punt by Senior, Jason Wells. Junior running back and linebacker, Pablo Garay, kicked the point after to put Bonita ahead 7-0.

With less than half of the second quarter left, Saints’ senior wide receiver Malcolm Shirley ran in a 3 yard touchdown to cap off a 58 yard drive. Two-way receiver and defensive back, Shawn Boaz, kicked the point after making for a tie game.

A minute later Bonita’s 6’2”, 205 lb. Williams, received a deep 66 yard touchdown pass from junior fullback Cody Borquez on a throwback screen. Garay again kicked the point after putting Bonita up 14-7 at the half.

“That was a quarterback’s dream right there, to catch a pass and take it to the house,” Williams said. “We practiced that all week, and I was telling the coaches if we run that play, I am taking it the house.”

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Phillip Agayo received a 20 yard touchdown pass from Mike Williams who avoided heavy pressure from the Saints’ defense. Following the extra point from Garay, Bonita took the lead, 21-7.

“The big plays are what killed us tonight,” Saints coach Roland De Anda said. “Hats off to Bonita. They made the plays when they had to and we didn’t. They deserved the win tonight.”

In the fourth, the Saints tried to mount a comeback when senior tight end Gean Bernardino scored on a 8 yard touchdown run. The Saints missed the point after touchdown, and could not score again losing to Bonita 21-13.

On the defensive side, there were many notable stars from both teams. Senior Blake La Rue on the Bearcats had 19 tackles. Senior Jason Wells had a clutch blocked punt against the Saints, with junior Fito Padilla recovering a fumble to help with the Bearcat’s win. The Saints had 6 sacks with senior Brian Richards leading with 4. The Saints only allowed 7 first downs, but this was not enough to stop the Bearcats.

The Bonita Bearcat football team had an outstanding 2004-2005 season. Blowout wins at both Cypress and South El Monte really got the ball rolling for the Bearcats. With a win against SanDimas, in an intensely fought battle, the Bearcats came out on top, bringing the coveted Smudge Pot Trophy home where it belongs. In league play, the coaches and Bonita Bearcats had huge wins over Los Altos, Wilson, and Garey which propelled them to their second League Championship in their third year of moving to the powerful Miramonte League. The Coaching Staff, led by coach Podley at the helm, did an excellent job preparing its team which really showed during the games. Congratulations to the coaches and players on another successful Bearcat season.

Smudge Pot School Spirit

Every year at Bonita, we face off against our rivals, the San Dimas Saints, at our annual Smudge pot football game. This time of year brings much pride and school spirit to the Bonila campus. The students look forward to many events through- out the year, and the Smudge pot game is one of the most favored and anticipated. This year the students participated in several different Smudge pot related activities. Such activities included dress days, class competitions, and several rallies. These activities helped boost The morale of the entire student body, and helped inspire the Bonita Varsity football team to another triumphant victory over the Saints.

The students were not the only participants involved, Teachers also got in on the action. We held the first annual Smudge pot King and Queen, in which alumni of Bonita were allowed to participate. Mrs.Lindsay and Mr. Archibald were crowned during the Smudge pot rally. In addition to crowning a King and Queen, the teachers also danced their hearts out as members of the San Dimas Saints. This year’s Smudge Pot game did not disappoint. The players played with all their might and were victorious . The students hope that next year’s game will be just as successful as this years.

SDHS FOOTBALL Rules

Was it the coaches, the athletes, or just the luck of the game? Whatever it was, the Varsity football team was new and in- proved. Although they did not keep the Smudgepot they received a title they had not earned since 1976: Valley Vista League cham- ing at SMS seemed to be a charm for this team. “We practiced alt I think that’s what helped us win,” said junior Eric Samples. With the hard work and endurance these players put into the game it was about time their effort paid off. The excitement of winning not only kept the players pumped up, but it brought more support back for each game. “All the fans cheering in the crowd were cool,” said senior Robert Doll. The cheerleaders could not do it all it helped a lot when die-hard fans came to support the Saints rain or shine. “The games were always fun to watch no matter what the weather. I was always there to cheer the Saints on” said senior Jake Oshiro. The players worked very hard practicing every day for two hours and going over new strategies for the next big game. They did all they could to get to the top. “Everyone worked so hard that I was hoping we would win league and we did,” said junior Ryan Gore. The team was very happy and felt like they had acheived their goals. “I was proud of our team because we had actually met out goals and over- came all obstacles” said senior Adam Carmody. “The feeling was exuberant, our work had paid off in the most ultimate manner” said senior Justin Wallace. – Ali Verbich

Smudge Pot Quotes

""'I love to play football and it hurt to stand on the sideline and watch,' Williams said. 'I spent a lot of time rehabbing it. It took a lot of time. I would be doing stretches and lifting and strengthening exercises,' Williams said. 'I did everything I could to get it strong and healthy.' (After the first victory against Cypress) 'It was awesome,' Williams said. 'It gave me confidence and made me believe that I am going to have a good year. I know I don't have to ease up and worry about my back.' "(Beating San Dimas - a game Williams considers to be the highlight of the season.) "The San Dimas win was the best because there's so much emotion put into that game and we're rivals,' Williams said. 'That's the game you think about all year long. It will stick with me the rest of my life.'" Mike Williams 2004"
